See what your bonus check will actually be after withholding, and whether the flat 22% federal withholding means a refund or a bill at filing.

How bonus withholding works in 2026

Most employers use the percentage method: a flat 22% federal withholding on supplemental wages (37% above $1M), plus Social Security and Medicare, plus state withholding where applicable. Your actual tax is whatever your ordinary marginal rate is. The calculator shows both numbers and the gap between them.

Some employers instead use the aggregate method (lumping the bonus into a regular paycheck), which typically over-withholds even more. Either way, filing trues it up.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my calculated check different from what payroll says?

Your employer may use the aggregate method, apply state/local withholding, or deduct 401(k)/benefits from the bonus. The filing-time outcome is the same either way.

Are bonuses subject to Social Security and Medicare?

Yes, always: 7.65% total (6.2% Social Security up to the annual wage base, 1.45% Medicare) regardless of withholding method.
